Stainless Flatware : Serve in Style With Our Durable Hotel Quality Serving Pieces
Stainless Flatware
Flatware is a terminology that is oftentimes used in the same context as cutlery which refers to those hand implements employed to eat, prepare, and serve meals. It is more commonly referred to as "silverware" in the United States, whereas the term "cutlery" refers more specifically to cutting tools or knives. Additionally, the terminology silverware suggests that the item was once manufactured from that specific metal.
In the Western world today, "flatware" is the most common terminology employed in reference to the forks, knives, and spoons placed on the dining table. In more modern times, plastic cutlery has become commonplace because it is disposable and doesn't require washing after use. Additionally, there are now combination utensils such as the spork or spoon and fork.
Designs of Flatware
One of the critical aspects to be aware of when you are considering the purchase of a new set of flatware is the design. Flatware, like dinnerware is classified into one of two categories - casual or formal. The design of the flatware, just like the metal that it is manufactured from, will influence factors such as the durability, maintenance, and pricing of these items, so you want to take that into consideration as well as the quality and type of material that flatware is constructed from.
Style plays a key role when it comes to flatware design. As with dinnerware, flatware needs to be a reflection of your lifestyle and personality, no matter if it is casual or formal in nature. No matter whether it is contemporary, traditional, or utilitarian, you will want to choose this according to the type of dinnerware that you own so that the styles do not clash. This is especially true if your dinnerware is either plain and/or solid in color or if there is a pattern.
Metals Used in Flatware Manufacturing
Care and longevity factors are greatly influenced by the type of metal that flatware is manufactured from. This also affects the pricing of the items as well. For example, flatware that is constructed from Stainless Steel is rated as dishwasher safe and considered to be ideal for everyday use, whereas silver flatware is not and must be washed and polished by hand. In addition to the extra care criteria, silver flatware is more costly than stainless.
Stainless steel flatware is manufactured in different grades as well. The highest quality stainless steel is referred to as 18/10 which means that it is 18% chromium and 10% nickel in composition. Stainless steel flatware is resistant to staining and rust proof because of the chromium whereas the luster and shine results from the nickel used in the composition. Composite steel is the balance of the composition and is what gives stainless steel flatware its durability and strength.
Flatware is also manufactured with gold accents. Hand washing and polishing is also required with this type of flatware just like with silver flatware. Flatware with gold accents is also considered to be formal as well, just like silver flatware.

"Can people use chopsticks in non-Asian restaraunts in Canada?"?
A Chinese student of mine is moving to Canada and doesn't like using western cutlery. She knows that most restaraunts will not provide chopsticks, so she will carry her own. She is not concerned about people staring at her, but will the restaraunts be offended. Of course, I am talking about fine cuisine restaraunts. What do you think? I told her I would ask this question for her. Thanks
I know it's kind of a silly question, but she is a great student and overly concerned, of course I told it would be more polite to not use chopsticks in specialty restaurants, and she will certainly do her best.
Hi I live in Canada and I have actually witnessed people using chopsticks in restaurants other then (Chinese restaurants) around here. The individual restaurant owners and worker don't seem to get upset about it. I actually think it is kind of nice that an individual is not afraid to express their own culture in public. As for what the public might think about it...it would be really low for someone to laugh about that. Tell your student not to worry...
They actually sell chopsticks at the dollar stores here.
Tell your student that I doubt she will be judged by any of this.
I am also jealous because I can't use chopsticks.
I get frustrated and put them down and grab the fork again....lol
So it would be like me going to China I would have to bring a fork because I have practiced using chopsticks and I fail every time....

How To Create The Perfect Thai Atmosphere
Having guests home for dinner? Want to create a different environment, away from the usual? How about ordering or if you are game for it, cooking Thai food and creating a perfect Thai atmosphere, right here in your home? Don’t worry if you don’t know how to do it. We are here to help.
Set the Mood
Let’s start by setting the mood first. Thailand is a beautiful country with the best of nature’s bounty. So when you are creating a mood, ‘tropical’ is what you should be thinking. The must have items include a bright and colorful table cover, bamboo place-mats and runner that adds drama to the table. But if you really want to go the extra mile, then try to buy a traditional Thai table decoration from the Internet or your nearby market. What’s a dining table without a centerpiece? So to enhance the tropical feel and ambience, either pick up a traditional oriental centerpiece or create one with your choice of flowers.
Playing proper music goes a long way in setting the mood. Find some good, soulful Thai music to be played during dinner. If you can’t find Thai music, you can play Indonesian music. The soft and soothing rhythm of the music will create the perfect mood so that you guests can truly enjoy their Thai food experience.
Set the Table
If you thought that Thai food is best eaten with chopsticks, then think again. Thais prefer to eat their food using Western cutlery. Thai food is best eaten with a fork and a table spoon. The spoon works in two ways, to cut the food (instead of the knife) and to scoop the food into the mouth. While the fork is held in the left hand, the spoon is help in the right. Once you get used to eating this way, you wouldn’t want to eat any other way, Thai food or not!
Thai food doesn’t have separate courses, like in Western cuisine. The Thais sample one dish at a time and never combine the various dishes. Most dishes are sampled with a serving of fragrant Thai rice or noodle. Therefore, you can simply place all your dishes on the table, including the steamed rice. The best way to enjoy a Thai food meal is to taste every dish individually, as combining various dishes may lose their appeal.
We hope you and your guests enjoy your Thai food dinner!
