tissue type for bone marrow ?
A few years back a relative had to have a bone marrow transplant but because he had inherited a tissue type from his aboriginal ancestors (Australia) it was difficult to find a match. If other relatives had the same tissue type would they also need to match in other ways ? and What is this tissue type ?
Is there a big difference of tissue type between races ?
Marrow is matched by HLA (human leukocyte antigen) tissue type. Anyone going through the transplant has to be matched to their donor, and when using marrow or peripheral blood, it has to be a perfect or near perfect match. Cord blood can be less of a match, but not everyone can do cord blood is a lil more difficult in other ways.
