During the Medieval Ages, on which arm did knights most commonly wear their shields on?
The left arm.
The English drive on the LEFT, not the right!
It also makes sense in that:
1. Most people are right-handed, and thus the instrument of use (weapon) is in the dextrous hand. Doing things with the left hand was considered negative due to superstitions.
2. Most stair cases in military buildings were spiral and went clockwise going up. Defenders had a clear field of defence to people coming up the stairs because their right hand was free to wield wepond and the centre of the stair case acted as a shield.
Bear in mind that a lot of representations we have of mediaeval knights are film and storybook caricatures.
Gaylene's points on left handedness are very well made. Even today, left handedness is sometimes refered to as 'sinistrality'.
