just wondering what are the chances it's a fake damascus sword. Also, I asked the seller where the sword was made, and he said China. How dependable are China-made swords? I'm not looking for something to spar with, but neither am I looking for some good-for-nothing decorative wall candy. so by that criteria, is this sword a good investment, or should I look elsewhere?

When I first decided to buy a sword on-line, I’ll be the first to admit that I really had no idea what I was doing. And as a consequence, like most first time sword buyers, I ended up wasting a lot of my time and money on crappy “sword-like objects” that should have never even been drawn from their scabbards!
I think there are two main reasons why its better to buy a REAL sword than a purely ornamental "sword-like object" (SLO).
Lets face it, it's a whole lot cooler to hang an authentic sword on the wall than a cheap, lightweight wall-hanger that for all its functionality, might as well be made from plastic. And the second reason? Well, let's be totally honest here. And I don’t know too many sword enthusiasts who can resist the urge take their sword outside for a few practice swings. Unfortunately, most swords for sale on the internet aren’t designed to take ANY “abuse” (read as 'use') at all.
The overwhelming majority of cheap Japanese style swords being sold on-line are not in any way functional. Sure, they are made of steel and yes, some of them might even be sharp - but sharpness alone doesn't mean very much if the blade bends or snaps on the first strike. Now don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with buying some nice looking Samurai sword sets to display over the mantelpiece, etc.
Essentially, most display swords are made of Stainless Steel - which is a great choice for knives - but in anything over 12" long (like a sword) it tends to become overly brittle. What makes things worse though is that the tang of display swords is typically a thin steel rod welded to the blade. Such a tang tends to bend and or break off inside the handle when swung, which can sometimes send the blade flying out like a missile.
In short, a functional Katana at an absolute bare minimum needs:
- to be forged from properly heat treated high carbon steel.
- they also have what is called a "differentially tempered blade" - meaning that the sharp edge of the sword is harder than the spine, giving the sword flexibility (so it doesn't shatter on impact) but also extreme cutting power.
- a full tang and solid assembly, preferably double pegged to the handle for extra safety.
- and a weight no more than 3lbs that is properly balanced to reach optimum cutting velocity.
Any sword which possesses these most basic characteristics stands at least a reasonable chance of being a half decent facsimile. And indeed there are quite a few very roughly made mass produced 'bare bones authentic Japanese swords 'wanna-be's' available for around the US$100 mark that are at least a step up from the stainless steel wall hangers.
Swinging a sword (sharpened or not - remember it still has a sharp point) without formal training is dangerous too, obviously. You can get a nasty cut or worse. It's exactly like swinging around a 3 foot long (or longer) razor blade. Considering that you can easily cut yourself just oiling the blade, swinging it around like a fool is more dangerous. As for the katana and other Samurai weapons, by "formal training", I mean taking a class at a dojo - not teaching yourself through videos/books or having friends teach you. I'm not implying that Japanese swordsmanship videos/books are useless but they are not good substitutes for formal training. If you're thinking about taking formal classes but not sure what it entails, then getting a book or a video will give you a general idea. Some books explain etiquette and history which are very important as the Sensei (teacher) at the dojo will most likely delve into those subjects. For those who are already taking classes at a dojo, books and videos may serve as good reference material in case you forget how to do certain things after class.

Can you carry a knife in public in Canada?
I will be moving to Winnipeg, Manitoba in the next year or so, and I was wondering what the knife laws there are? In some states of the US you can wear large pocket knives in public and private establishments as long as the belt clip or the holster is visible on the outside of the body and not concealed. I would like to continue doing so if it's possible.
The first girl is right, I am a former chef and when I worked years ago in Alberta, I was amazed the number of guys with knives on there belt in seethes, if you carry it in your pocket in any province that is considered a concealed weapon and is illegal, but most provinces allow a certain size and blade length to be carried in public in plain view.
Switchblades are illegal in this country along with snap butterfly knives, but a jackknife or small utility knife even those used in construction are allowed, but check with the local police force or RCMP to make sure, you could be innocently walking down the street and be stopped and then what do you do?, ignorance of the law will still get you a fine or charged.

Is it legal to cary a Ka-Bar TDI knife in California?
Ka-Bar makes a great "easy deploy" knife for utility and security situations that can be worn in a nifty plastic belt holster. Very much interested in picking one up, but I'm not sure if it would be legal to carry (concealed or outside)...
Is it California legal to carry a fixed blade knife (3'' or shorter) concealed? Worn on the hip?
In California the length of the blade is irrelevant. All fixed blade knives are "dirks or daggers," and thus cannot be carried concealed. A knife worn OPENLY suspended from the waist in a sheath is not concealed. (Penal Code section 12020.) However, this is only State law; there may be some local ordinance prohibiting the open carrying of knives.

Damascus Blade
Swords From the Ancient Dynasties
Defence is a major preoccupation for any ruler - from the rulers of way back in antiquity to President Obama today. Times of war see resources being drained toward a wasteful expense, as well as major scientific advancements as people try to find out why things happen, and how to mitigate the injuries caused by bad things.
In the ancient Chinese dynasties, warfare was undoubtedly complex, but the complexities took a different form. While today we bomb strategic locations, in those days swordsmen developed ever-finer instruments and techniques.
Here is a quick run-through of the popular swords and sword-making techniques in the Han, Song, Qing and Ming dynasties.
First, the Hans. The Han dynasty's rule spanned from 206 BC to 220 AD. The early period of Han rule saw the rise of steel as the material preferred in swords. Both single-edged(dao) and double-edged(jian) swords now began to be made of steel, with bronze swords falling rapidly out of favor.
The process of differential heat-treatment also took birth during Han rule. Sword blanks were now forged and folded, with ring pommels being introduced.
In middle and late Han rule, this differential heat treatment process was developed further, and became the art of "refining". Swords were now manufactured in layers, with the top, core and bottom being made separately and then welded together. At this point, China began to export swords to Korea and Japan.
Fast-forward across nearly a century, and you reach the Song dynasty in 960 AD. During the reign of Song emperor Shenzong, swordcraft reached new and unprecedented heights. Assessment bureaus were set up to determine the quality of weapons, and a manual on quality control in weapon manufacture was written and circulated.
Ring pommels, discontinued in the middle Tang period, was revived by Shenzong. Also, the Zhanmadao - a horse-chopping sword - was created to help soldiers fight against cavalry. Sword blades were now imported from Damascus and Japan.
Late in the Song period, Japan was invaded by the Mongols. It was during this period that they realized how much continental blades were superior - though stouter and less fine - than their own blades.
The Ming dynasty, ruling from the late fourteenth to the mid seventeenth century, saw China importing Japanese Wodao swords on a mass scale. Smiths came to prefer non-clay methods of heat differential treatment, while the Damascus-native process of making twist-core steel reached China's wordsmiths.
The Japanese shinogi-zukuri - a ridged cross-section used in single-edged swords - became popular once more, as the Chinese faced repeated attacks from Japanese pirates. The 2-meter long changdao saber, modeled on the Japanese pirate nodachi, also acquired prominence. Overall, the Chinese art of sword-making declined, only to be revived later on in the Qing dynasty.
Under the Qings, handicrafts as well as sword-making received a much-needed boost. The dao and its characteristics were standardized, while a document on "Weapons Workmanship Standards" was also compiled. The niuweidao - the oxtail single-edged sword - also made an appearance, but was used by civilians and not the military.
Today, swords of all these dynasties and more are available, though only as collectors' items. Each sword has a unique historical motivation behind it; the more you know, the more you want to know more.

first,look for tall buildings with eagles flying around them.they're viewpoints.it won't be located on your map so you'll have to look for it manually.climb the viewpoints and it will reveal your next objectives.there are plenty of view points so try to keep your eyes peeled.hope that helped.

Help with memory block 4 in Assassins Creed?
I dont know what to do!!! I started in the poor district of Damascus. I went to the bureau and he said to go to to the following directions. I cleared ALL the view points in the poor district of Damascus and I also saved ALL of the citizens and I cant find anything i can do such as ease drop, Interrogation or pick pocket. Then i didn't know what to do so i went back to the bureau and altair said my investigation isn't finished So i gave up and went to the poor district acre and did the exact same thing (view points and citizens). Please tell me what to do im fed up!
There are 6 investigations you can do. When you go to a view point to see where everything is, they should show up as this white boxes on your map and if you go over it, it should say "Interrogation", "Pickpocket", etc. Your disk may be dirty.
